OK, there you are, down on your hands and knee's sorting through old, worn out women's and men's shoes. Somehow they have magically collected on the closet floor. Thoughts of being buried under shoes of all occasions, have drifted through your brain. Why is it so much easier to find a home for children's cast offs?

It seems there are always younger cousins or neighbors that are just the right size and would love to have a pair of almost new shoes. The speed at which children grow out of their shoes, makes second hand footwear a real bargain for the younger set. But how do you recycle women's and men's shoes? By the time adult shoes reach the throw away stage, most of them have walked through their share of snow and mud. They have also spent, many hours standing in wedding rehearsals, shooting baskets or walking waiting room floors. They are not in the best condition to be given a second chance.

So, what is next for these aging women's and men's shoes? Most cities have recycling bins. Old clothing, tennis shoes, slippers, heavy work boots and household goods are put in large bins. Then they are sorted. Unusable items are thrown away. Salvageable articles of clothing, shoes or household goods, are categorized and priced. Then they are marketed so that those less fortunate can pay a few dollars and receive clothing or shoes in wearable but not new condition. Recycling in this fashion, gives a second life to the clothing and shoes that would otherwise be thrown in the landfill.

In addition to recycling women's and men's shoes through second hand stores, there are other options. One of these would be through donation. There are several fairly new on-line companies that accept shoes in good condition. Many parts of the world do not have shoes for all of their people. Organizations have been created to bring the excess of one country to provide for the scarcity of another. These can be found by web search. There are organizations in Australia, UK, and US to name just a few.

Another type of recycling, is something that has been recently developed. Only a small segment of the population uses or is aware of recycling endeavors that grind shoes up, separates the parts and make others products of the pieces. This type of recycling can be used for all types women's and men's shoes, as well as children's shoes. Recycling is not a novel idea. In fact, taking products apart to make other products has been around for centuries. Some of the parts used from the rubber on athletic shoes are recycled and used for synthetic sports fields and indoor basket ball courts.

Short of destroying women's and men's shoes when they have that lived in look, recycling is the way to go. Giving the best ones to second hand stores, donating to world wide companies that distribute to areas of short supply, and using shoe material to make other products, are favorite ways to recycle worn out shoes.
